Thank you and goodbye - Thursday 29th September



Yesterday evening we went for a pre-prandial promenade along Wissant seafront. It was a beautiful evening, the surf crashing on the rocks and a brisk breeze. Between the tankers, cruise ships, paddle boarder and ferries, we espied the White Cliffs of Dover on the horizon. Oh home sweet home! But not quite yet 😂😂.





Before heading back to the bobils, we stopped at a bar for a “coffee”. A dog walked into a bar wearing goggles. No, this is not the beginning of a joke….see surreptitiously obtained photos. A beautiful dog wearing blue swimming goggles. Between Tina Turner and Biggles we have seen some very unusual canines over the last couple of days.


This morning we made our way to Auchan to top up on food and wine, and Decathlon for some swimming trunks for Richard, plus some fleeces, jumpers and a towelling turban-type head thingie to dry your hair after a shower, as recommended by Lynn. We lunched on frites from the famous Friterie in the car park outside Auchan before continuing on to the campsite at St Valery sur Somme where we were meeting up with Nick and Maggie Ives.  


Tonight we dined upon fish pie and garlic bread, cooked by Nick, toasted Nick and Maggie’s 40th wedding anniversary with French champagne, and finished off with Lindt chocolates and a game of Cards Against Disney. What better way to end the day than with delicious food, fine wine and laughter with good friends.

And what better way to end the MesserSmith Norwegian Adventure. Thank you for reading our blog - we have enjoyed writing it and hopefully entertaining you with our travelling tales.  Our adventure is, sadly, now over…for now…!

Buses, submarines and scooters - Friday 16th September

Apologies for no blog yesterday - we didn’t do a fat lot except drive to Malmo, find a campsite and gawp at the approx 16 km long Oresund Bridge which we will be crossing tomorrow, to Copenhagen.  We decided to stay here for 2 nights and do a bit of exploring of the town. The campsite is lovely, with friendly, helpful people - and really cheap, compared to everywhere else we have stayed in Sweden - and the children’s bathroom facilities are gorgeous so I had to take some pictures! This morning, we hopped on a number 34 bus into town, then hopped off and onto the number 4 bus which would take us into the heart of Malmo old town, close to the museums. Richard, not understanding the concept of travelling by bus, shouted to Lynn ‘stop, don’t press the button’ which she had just pressed … to stop the bus. Lynn thinks Richard thought that the bus would stop immediately, a bit like an emergency stop on a train, rather than pressing the button to just notify the driver to stop at the next ...

Bertie, Louis XIV (aka Tina Turner) and various statues - Wednesday 28th September

Monday evening at the Menin Gate, Ypres, was very moving. We did the 10 minute walk from the campsite, taking the pathway that ran along the city walls until we reached the monument. A small crowd had already gathered by 7.30 when we arrived there, to await the evening’s ceremony…and Richard and I spotted someone we knew! A lovely gentleman called Alan Reed, who is a historian with a  vast knowledge of the battlefield sites of France and Belgium, was there with a group of people he was guiding. He, along with his colleague Andrew Hamilton, have written several books about World War 1 which, as some of you reading this may remember, I have had the pleasure of producing and publishing. The Bridge, bikes and blaring music - Sunday 18th September

We left Sweden on Saturday morning and drove across the 16km long Oresund Bridge (of ‘The Bridge’ fame), to Denmark with smiles on our faces all the way. What an amazing structure. It was built between 1995 and 1999, opening in July 2000 and costing €2.6 billion. It’s a combined railway and motorway bridge, the longest in Europe, running from Malmo in Sweden to the artificial island of Peberholm in the middle of the Oresund strait, where it plunges down into a tunnel before continuing to Copenhagen in Denmark. It takes approx 10 minutes to drive across and  cost €110 for each of the motorhomes. Please note - the aerial view is a stock photo not from our drone 😂! We had taken a flyer with the campsite in Copenhagen as we couldn’t book online for some reason; we had filled in the online booking  form and tried paying with all our various credit cards - but they were rejected one by one …..and we couldn’t ALL have gone over our limits…could we?
